What’s going on at UC Extension?

There has been a lot of activity over the past several months regarding the UC Extension campus, site of the 55 Laguna proposed development. More than 2 years after the proposed development was unveiled to the neighborhood, there is a great deal of effort being expended to reach a final plan. The newest proposal from the developers includes teaming with openhouse to provide LGBT and friends senior housing on a portion of the site, along with other changes. The developer presented its current proposal in a meeting on Tuesday, July 18th. At the HVNA meeting on July 27th, the membership will be asked to vote on resolutions more correctly framing our view on what components should be part of any development on the former UC Extension campus.

- Nomination of buildings on the Site
- Elements supported on the Site

In the past several weeks, many civic leaders have shown their support for components on the site, even as they have also expressed their support for a community process that allows, and encourages, strong participation from groups and individuals. None of us is pleased at how the process regarding the future of the UC Extension site has been handled. Those who are now involved in the process, whether new to it or through involvement over a period of time, have stated their intent to work together with the community so that any proposal for the UC Extension site be the best it can possibly be. We welcome their involvement.

It is time to see if there is a consensus of opinion that would give HVNA a stand on which to advocate, something we have not been able to do thus far in the process. While everyone is encouraged to advocate for what he or she feels is the best use, the hope is that we can reach consensus and thus the ability to more strongly participate in the debate over the site. It is important that your voice be heard as we continue our efforts on behalf of the neighborhood. Please come to the meeting and participate as we express our opinion on the future direction of the neighborhood.
