A Living Street
On Wednesday, September 5th, the Department of Public Works held a hearing for the major encroachment / improvements along Linden Street in front of Blue Bottle Café. As we went to press, the results of the hearing were not available.
The intent of the neighbors involved is to turn this portion of Linden Street into a “living street” or woonerf, such as are found in Northern Europe. Streets are turned back into what they once were: gathering places that accommodate people on foot, bicycles and in vehicles, with no separation of space, and with benches and plantings to make the street welcoming.

The plans to transform the street have been in process for some time, and final approval is still in the future. For a feel of what the street may become, spend a little time at the Blue Bottle Café on a weekend, or any morning. People gather together, get to know each other, and truly become neighbors.
PARKing
There is much excitement in the ‘hood about alternative uses for parking spaces. On September 21st, neighbors will join in the rebar action and convert parking spaces not just for green space but for other sorts of gathering and public spaces, too. Several long-time members of the community voiced support for this project at the August HVNA meeting, and as we go to press there are plans for a space on Hayes Street in front of Zonal, on Haight Street in the Lower Haight, and near the Public Library on Fulton Street.
As one neighbor said, “Cars take up space that could be used for other things.” Join with your neighboring merchants and residents, and help us all change the way we look at things. Community leaders Russell Pritchard, Robin Levitt, Jason Henderson, Vallie Brown, Karen Mauney-Brodek, Jim Warshell and Gail Baugh have all expressed interest in various projects that day. For more information on the rebar concept, go to www.parkingday.org. For more information on how you can participate right in your own neighborhood, contact one of the above, or voice@hayesvalleysf.org for more information. Let’s do something different!
