Ballot Propositions

While some outcomes of the recent election were unsurprising, the margin of victory, and defeat, of Proposition A and Proposition H were unexpected. Polling information shortly before the election showed A slightly ahead and H slightly behind, each statistically even. Results through the end of the week show A with a substantial majority of 55% in favor and H losing resoundingly with 66% opposed.

HVNA took an early position on both propositions, based on our support of transit as well as support of the local planning process. Many members of the organization were active, and HVNA’s presence in the Prop A/ Prop H campaign did not go unnoticed. Several people in the campaign were amazed that we brought so many people and so much energy throughout the effort to educate and get out the vote. On the last day, Chris Pederson, Karen Mauney-Brodek, Jim Warshell, Jason Henderson, Robin Levitt and Adam Millard-Ball were amongst those who participated in efforts in support of HVNA’s position. All are to be commended for their efforts.

November Meeting – Focus on Building

Traditionally, this last meeting of the year has been a pot-luck, affording members the opportunity to join together and enjoy each other’s company in an informal setting as we build community, one interaction at a time. Please come with your special dish to share. If the timing doesn’t allow that, come anyway and share in the bounty from your neighbors – there are always some great desserts!

The meeting will also focus on two other building blocks in the community, with presentations from The Hayes, nearing completion at Gough and Page Streets, and from Octavia Court, housing for the developmentally disabled at the corner of Oak and Octavia on Parcel Q. Octavia Court is a Redevelopment project, and we’re getting a chance to weigh in on the changes to the project before they appear before the Redevelopment Commission in early December.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Unsung No Mo’

When you see her, and she is involved in so many activities that you WILL see her, please congratulate Sheryl Davis. She is the recipient of the Unsung Hero of the African American Community Award from the SF Public Library. Sheryl will receive her award on Sunday, November 18th from 1–3 pm at the Main Library’s Koret Auditorium.

Sheryl is the leader of Mo’ Magic, very involved in Community Partners United, and an active voice for all of us in the neighborhood. Her energy is inspirational, and her willingness to work behind the scenes on behalf of the children and others in the community continues to make a huge difference. Please plan on attending the ceremony to show your support for all of Sheryl’s hard work and dedication.

Help Paint the Center!

Located at the corner of Octavia and Market, anchoring that entrance to Hayes Valley, is the LGBT Center, an HVNA member. We are very excited that the historic Fallon Building portion of the Center is scheduled to be transformed. And you can help!

The Queen Anne Victorian side of the Center, also known as the Fallon Building, is being painted next spring. This building has been painted the familiar monochrome blue since the Center opened in 2002. Gifts from Partners in Preservation and the Bothin Foundation, as well as ongoing fundraising efforts, are making it possible to attend to repairs as well as bring some glamour and refinement to the building’s appearance.

A committee was formed earlier this year, made up of community members, Center leadership, and staff. The committee worked closely with a color specialist in San Francisco, to create two distinct color palettes for the building.

Palette “A” is comprised of grays, lavenders, and purples, with sliver leafing for finer details. Palette “Z” showcases nature-based tones of tan, maroon, and green, with gold leafing.

You can help by letting the Center know which colors you like better! To participate, go to http://www.sfcenter.org/event/paintourbuilding.html or visit the Center in person and vote in the lobby. This survey will be open until mid-December. Stay tuned, the Center will make the final color choice public in early January 2008!
