Mo Magic Resource Guide
By Bob Barnwell

Mo’Magic has printed up an extensive Western Addition Summer Resource Guide, including numerous listings of summer programs offered to the youth of our area. This includes organization and contact information, ages served and a description of the programs. The guide can be seen at the website – www.momagic.org as well as requested on email at info@momagic.org.

Mo’Magic is a collaboration of many groups and CBO’s in our neighborhood. This resource guide should be used by all that are interested in finding activities to do over the summer. There is also an events calendar included in the guide. Hayes Valley Neighborhood Association actively collaborates with Mo’Magic and is grateful to have this guide available.

Back To School!

We are planning ahead for our annual Back To School event – hopefully with more parents this time. On Monday, August 25, the PTA will help welcome the kids and their families back to school. Planning will begin in early August. Contact Gail Baugh, community contact for John Muir PTA – g.baugh@sbcglobal.net / 415-265-0546 or Español & English co-president Lourdes Beltan, 415-410-5084 to help make this event successful for our families.

Last year’s event featured healthy snacks, school supplies, crossing guards to remind drivers that school was back in session, and local and City officials welcoming the kids back to school. Please get involved with these leaders of tomorrow. You do not have to have children attending John Muir to be a member of the PTA. You only have to care about the children!

Teacher Appreciation Day

Principal Wheaton and PTA President Gail Baugh look on as Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi reads a proclamation before the student body at John Muir Elementary School’s Teacher Appreciation Day in May. Community Partners United members presented each staff member with a vase and flowers as thanks for their devotion to our kids.

Summer Reading Kick-Off

Mo’Magic’s summer reading program kicked off at Yoshi’s on June 23rd. More details about this much-needed program are available in the President’s column and online at www.momagic.org. Statisics show that continued reading throughout the year, whether school is in session, or not, keeps kids from falling behind.
In order to get the kids excited, there were opportunities to read to the crowd, singing and hula hoop contests. As you can see from the photos, everyone participated – not just the kids. Beat Officer Ron Liberta showed his willingness to participate, but let’s just say the hula hoop won!
