Not Just a Gym

It’s been many years since there has been a gym in Hayes Valley. We had a rather famous gay gym for many years called Muscle Systems - aka Muscle Sisters, as it had a location on Market in the Castro - but now we have a gym again and it is much more than a regular work-out place. Live Fit Gym has been at 301 Fell St. at Gough for just a month. The O’Briens: Rennie, Kate and Patrick, are the owners/managers and are bringing the Wellness Gym idea to Hayes Valley. They originally started as a chiropractic office on Valencia and moved to the Wellness idea at that location and another before opening their third location in Hayes Valley.

The Wellness idea combines a regular gym with chiropractic and massage services. There is exercise equipment, personal training, exercise classes, Pilates and Spinning classes. There are major areas for chiropractic adjustments and Swedish and Hot Stone massages. Kate says the Live Fit Gym is designed for local residents and the locker room has lockers and steamed towels but no showers. They are offering monthly packages that range from $47 for the Live Fit Gym to $75 for one 1-hour Swedish massage per month with the gym and unlimited classes to $97 for one chiropractic adjustment per week plus one 1-Hr Swedish massage per month with the gym and unlimited classes. This is the most popular package for the 225 monthly members that have already signed up. There are several promotional offers also available. Another aspect to the Live Fit Gym is that there are no contracts or signup fees.

The Wellness idea also includes healthy ideas like a Weight-Loss Challenge which starts in June. For only $39, a 12 week class meets on Tuesdays at the Live Fit Gym with nutritionist and wellness coach Courtney Harris, who lives in Hayes Valley. It is modeled after the “Biggest Weight Loser” and the registration fee goes towards cash prizes to the winners, with a $10 contribution to www.gofitkids.org.
